Abstract

The shock index (heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure) reflects the overall cardiovascular status and is usually ≤ 0.7 heart beats per minute per mmHg.  An increased shock index in patients undergoing emergent intubation for acute respiratory failure can identify patients who are at risk for post-intubation hypotension.
